Tour Description

Everybody knows Rome for its ancient, medieval, and baroque art, but its street art scene is burgeoning too. Graffiti is ubiquitous in the Eternal City (some better than others), but knowing what’s worth seeing means keeping up-to-date with what’s happening, and where. That’s why I’ve designed this Street Art tour, to bring you the best of Rome’s streets and and give you a real feel of some of its most authentic neighborhoods.

As we explore the Ostiense and Testaccio districts on the southeast banks of the River Tiber, we’ll encounter street artworks by Blu, Roa, JB Rock. Lena Cruz (YourBan2030) and many others, discovering the stories behind their work and the context in which they were made.

Find the hidden street art of Testaccio & Ostiense

It’s no surprise that Testaccio and Ostiense are home to Rome’s most groundbreaking urban artworks. Rough around the edges and only recently gentrified, these neighborhoods were once sprawling working-class districts, most of whose residents worked either at the slaughterhouse (once Europe’s largest) or the power plant.

Even in antiquity, Testaccio was a center of industry, as preserved in the incredible ‘Mount Testaccio‘ – a manmade hill of broken pottery shards. We’ll walk around this remarkable attraction, soaking in the atmosphere of the shacks and bars hewn into it, and emerge at Testaccio Market for some tastings of traditional Roman street food.

Encounter an ancient pyramid in the heart of the center

As we explore the Testaccio district, we’ll stumble upon an ancient pyramid, built in the first century to house the remains of a Roman nobleman.

Learn the fascinating history of this monument, and of the picturesque cemetery in its shadow, within the grounds of which are the tombs of John Keates, Percy Shelley, and Antonio Gramsci among others.
