Marvel at Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel

For most guests, the highlight of my Complete Vatican tour is the stunning Sistine Chapel. The site of two of Michelangelo’s great masterpieces, the Universal Judgement and the famous frescoed ceiling, the Sistine Chapel is a curious but captivating mix between an active place of worship and a repository of the apex of western art. Before we step inside, I’ll give you all the knowledge and context you need to fully appreciate its greatness.

After admiring the Sistine Chapel, we’ll make our way into Saint Peter’s Basilica, the most famous church in the world, built on the site of Peter’s martyrdom. Inside we’ll find another masterpiece by Michelangelo, executed when the artist was in his mid-20s, and the only piece he ever signed: La Pietà. Our tour concludes outside in Saint Peter’s Square, surrounded by the awe-inspiring colonnaded architecture of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
