Tour Description

My classic Colosseum and Roman Forum tour fully immerses you in the fascinating history of ancient Rome, taking you on a journey from the city’s foundations to its imperial dominance over the Mediterranean and beyond.

Starting at the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli (Saint Peter in Chains), you’ll discover Michelangelo’s Moses, one of his lesser-known marble masterpieces, nourishing yourself with knowledge as I tell you its story. From here, it’s a short walk to the Colosseum, the world’s most famous ancient attraction. We’ll step straight inside with timed entry tickets and start exploring this atmospheric amphitheatre that has dominated the Roman skyline for nearly 2,000 years.

As we tour the Colosseum’s interior, you’ll be able to look down at the arena floor and see how its labyrinthine underground supplied the scene above. Discover a host of fascinating objects in the museum, absorbing their history and deepening your understanding. Learn about the Colosseum’s history, and the culture of those who built it: how Roman society was stratified, and how one’s social class determined where they sat (or indeed stood). And hear the stories of those who fought there, and perished in the name of honor, freedom, or condemnation.

Walk the Sacred Way & Roman Forum

After exploring the Colosseum, we’ll step outside onto the cobbles of the Via Sacra (or “Sacred Way“). An ancient road along which victorious generals paraded in triumph, the Sacred Way leads us straight inside the Roman Forum. Before making our way inside, we’ll pass by the Arch of Constantine, a richly decorated (and heavily recycled) triumphal arch dedicated to the emperor who started Rome’s move away from paganism and adopted Christianity as the empire’s official religion.

On our way into the Roman Forum, we’ll pass by the Arch of Titus, a monument that narrates the story of the Romans’ sack of Jerusalem and their consequent construction of the Colosseum as we make our way into the richest of Rome’s archaeological sites.

Explore the Roman Forum & finish at Piazza Venezia

Within the Roman Forum, we’ll visit temples, basilicas, architectural wonders and archaeological curiosities. We’ll visit the site where Julius Caesar was cremated, almost driving the Roman rabble to riot in the wake of his assassination. Situated in the valley between the Palatine Hill and the Capitoline Hill, the Roman Forum is an enigma that needs a guide’s insight, offering lots in the way of ruins but little that’s clear in the way of understanding.

This classic Colosseum and Roman Forum tour will bring the forum’s ruins, injecting history and context, and cementing your understanding of ancient Rome and its history. We finish at Piazza Venezia, at the foot of the Capitoline Hill, over which the gargantuan (if not somewhat garish) neoclassical monument ‘Il Vittoriano’ looms.
